We need help! Most of
these references are from 2006
(and the links have not been checked
lately), so we want suggestions for more current article references of
interest to Gunnison Democrats. But be careful about copyright
restrictions; posting of web references is fine but your webmaster will
not post clips from copyrighted material, unless allowed in some way.
This keeps us all out of trouble.
The references in this section will
frequently present a problem. Copies of news articles cannot in
general be posted because of copyright restrictions. Links to
articles may expire after one or two weeks depending on the archiving policies of
the publication. Some sites require no-cost registration, a
nuisance but generally not too burdensome. Please bear with us.
07/08: "Feeling No Pain", July 12 commentary by Bob Herbert for the NY TImes on the "Stop Whining" remark by the out-of touch Phil Gramm. This may be available to non-subscribers for a while. 06/08: Here is a recent U.S. government report on the effect of opening previously off-limits sources of oil and gas; the effect on prices and supply appears small and far in the future. Look and judge for yourself. The recent push by McCain and Bush is once again ignoring the facts. See http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/otheranalysis/ongr.html A recent op-ed by Thomas Friedman in the NY Times 6/22/08 is much more scathing! (It may not continue to be available on-line.) Look here for a recent letter to the editor in the Gunnison Country Times. Comment: IF YOU KNOW JOHN McCAIN IS LYING ABOUT OFFSHORE DRILLING, WHY SHOULD YOU BELIEVE WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT OTHER ISSUES? And another recent NY Times Opinion column relevant to the above... Paul Krugman "Know-Nothing Politics" August 7, 2008, available for a while at: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/08/opinion/08krugman.html?em It is rather venomous which will delight some of us and maybe make others uneasy. And one line should make us all worry: "According to one recent poll, 69 percent of Americans now favor expanded offshore drilling — and 51 percent of them believe that removing restrictions on drilling would reduce gas prices within a year." 02/06: Here is one of the best brief discussions I have seen of the global warming issue, from the back page of the American Physical Society publication APS NEWS (Feb. 2006 issue). Recommended for understanding the issue! Article from the American Physical Society on "Intelligent Design" from APS News Online October 2005. Very frightening! http://www.aps.org/apsnews/1005/100518.cfm October 2001 Scientific American article predicting nearly exactly the Katrina events! Scientific American: Drowning New Orleans And here is a more recent National Geographic article: http://www3.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0410/feature5/index.html ![]() Some magazine web pages; access to articles may be restricted (see note above): Harpers: http://www.harpers.org/ The Atlantic: http://www.theatlantic.com/ The New Republic: http://www.tnr.com/ The Nation: http://www.thenation.com/ National Geographic: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ Scientific American: http://www.sciam.com/ Mother Jones: http://www.motherjones.com/ SLATE: http://www.slate.com/ Radio & TV station Democracy Now! --- web site Gunnison/Crested Butte: DirecTV channel 375, Dish 9410 or 9415, KBUT 89.9 FM MWThF 4-5 PM |
