Your webmaster got so upset by Bush's "intelligent design" comments that he generated this picture (larger size on the home page) from an 1805 Ingres painting of Napoleon with a petulant look on his face.  Apologies to Ingres (and to Napoleon).  Notice that Dubya has the light coming from the opposite direction to the rest of the world, as we know already.

I sent a letter to Sen. Salazar  about the "Hydrogen Initiative" in the new energy bill.  It's not a subject uppermost in my concern but I happen to know something about it. Here is a copy of my letter, if you're at all interested, and here is a .pdf copy of the American Physical Society "discussion paper" on the subject.
Click here to see his thoughtful reply.  I assume he doesn't mind my posting it here.  My main concern was the rapid deployment before it was known to work, judging by the time scales in the Energy Bill.  Just like "missile defence"!
Here is the wikipedia entry for the FutureGen coal conversion plant Sen. Salazar's letter refers to.  It contains references to the official site etc.  I hope the sequestered CO2 doesn't get loose, I'm thinking of the lake in Mali that killed so many when it "burped" CO2!  This would, if successful, provide the non-polluting hydrogen using a resource abundant in the USA (although some of us are concerned with the environmental issues in getting it out!)

Another letter:
I have just sent this letter to Sen. Salazar about a possible source of abundant and safe nuclear energy, called an Accelerator Driven System, using thorium (which happens to be abundant SW of Gunnison.)  Copies (with different first paragraph) are also going to Gov. Ritter, John Salazar, Gail  Schwartz, Kathleen Curry, Andrew Romanoff and others.
This is the COSMOS article referred to.

A recent attachment from an email correspondent:

A toy for the disgruntled... take a look at this web interactive video!

APPARENTLY THIS IS THE MOST POPULAR SCREENSAVER IN THE U.S.

(IF HE GETS STUCK, JUST MOVE HIM WITH YOUR CURSOR.)

PLAY ON!  Click on:        http://www.planetdan.net/pics/misc/georgie.htm

(But where are the fires of Hell leaping up from below??)

Why help never arrived
The above was forwarded by Webmaster's late daughter in law.  Don't get it?  Look more carefully at the picture.

Protest songs are starting!   This information was passed on by Elizabeth Lypp from Los Alamos High School (webmaster's granddaughter):  A punk-rock group Green Day has just won MTV's VMA Viewer's Choice award.  Here are some of the printable lyrics of "American Idiot":

All across the alien nation
Everything isn't meant to be okay
Television dreams of tomorrow
We're not the ones who're meant to follow
Convincing them to walk you

Don't wanna be an American idiot
One nation controlled by the media
Information nation of hysteria
It's going out to idiot America.

The group seems to be quite popular.   This reminds us of the very powerful effect of songs in the 60's.  Let us hope!

If you should happen to visit Santa Fe, you ought to visit Santa Fe Hemp  at 105 E. Water St. (very near the central plaza)
run by the daughter of a Gunnison friend.  They carry a lot of bumper stickers, some are available online (see "media")
as well as hemp fabric products.  Amusing to webmaster... his uncle (& namesake) grew many acres of hemp on the McLeod
homestead in Saskatchewan during WW II!

Here is another good online source for bumper stickers:
